Former Warriors goalkeeper Energy ‘Gokwe’ Murambadoro is optimistic about Zimbabwe’s chances of breaking their long-standing knockout stage jinx at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.

With proper preparation, he believes that the Warriors can make a significant impact in the tournament.

Zimbabwe has been drawn into Group B for the 37th edition of AFCON, set to take place in December in Morocco, alongside powerhouse teams Egypt, South Africa, and Angola.

Despite failing to progress beyond the group stages in their last five AFCON appearances, Murambadoro asserts that with diligent preparation, this trend can be reversed.

“It looks like a good group; we need to ramp up our preparations. Playing against strong teams will benefit the boys immensely,” Murambadoro told Soccer24.

He expressed confidence in head coach Michael Nees and the talent within the squad, stating, “We have a very capable group of players that can advance from this group and reach the knockout stage.”

Murambadoro added, “Progression to the knockout stage is very possible. We’ve been in this position before and now know what we need to do.”

His experience as part of the Warriors squad that qualified for their first AFCON appearance in 2004 lends credibility to his optimism.

Despite concerns about the current team’s lack of AFCON finals experience, Murambadoro does not see it as a disadvantage.

“The younger players have participated in significant African matches, so they are familiar with high-pressure situations. It’s all about embracing the moment without fear,” he explained.

He encouraged the team to give their best effort while enjoying the experience, reminding them that every football-loving Zimbabwean will be cheering them on.

As the Warriors prepare for this crucial tournament, Murambadoro’s insights serve as a rallying cry for both players and fans alike, fostering hope that this could finally be their year to shine on Africa’s biggest stage.
