MDCA successfully held its Kwekwe Central Parliamentary by-election yesterday.
Information reaching My Gokwe Media confirms that four MDCA candidates battled it out. The majority of the people expected Blessing Chebundo to scoop it but due to long factional battles, he was shoved away by the MDC National youth leader Judith Tobaiwa who resoundingly won Kwekwe Central by-by-election.
The results were as follows:
- Judith Tobaiwa got 211 votes.
- Former Member of Parliament Blessing Chebundo got 140 votes.
- Former Health Minister, Henry Madzorera got 4 votes.
- Andrew Marongwe got 3 votes.
The election of youthful Judith Tobaiwa is crucial for two reasons: female and youth empowerment. She comes in to restore confidence to the MDCA whose candidate lost to the late Blackman.
This comes after the violent and gun-fire associated ZANU PF primaries. Following this gun-fire at the Kwekwe ZANU PF HQ and associated violence, the results were nullified until further notice.
Businessman cum clergyman, Cde Kandros Mugabe battled it out with miner and philanthropist Energy ‘Dhala’ Ncube. Mugabe won the election but the violent ensued with people citing irregularities and corruption leading to the nullification of the vote.
The seat fell vacant following the death of the MP elect, Masango ‘Blackman’ Matambanadzo in July who had been elected on a National Patriotic Front (NPF) ticket. He was also the ZANU PF candidate in the 2013 to 2018 after defeating the MDC -T and hitherto, MDCA candidate Blessing Chebundo.
In the previous election, Blackman as he was popularly known won against MDC Alliance’, Blessing Chebundo, Kandros Mugabe of ZanuPF and independent candidate and lawyer Josiniah Maupa.
His death opened Kwekwe for a by-election. The MDCT led by the interim leader, Thokozani Khupe have not yet chosen its candidate. Hence, as it stands the MDCA is the only party with a ready candidate for the Kwekwe Central Parliamentary elections.
