As pressure was mounting each day on the president of Barcelona, Josep Maria Bartomeu, he finally resigned from his position yesterday.
Bartomeu who became the club president since 2014, fell out with the Argentine captain, Lionel Messi last year August when the forward handed over his transfer request and because of that, he was set to receive a vote of no confidence as fans no longer love him.
Barcelona which ended last year without any silverware, not mentioning a 3-1 humiliation by Los Blancos in their own ground on Saturday worsened the situation for Bartomeu and the entire board and acted as the major push factor for thier resignation.
Since Bartomeu took over leadership, Barcelona have managed to win four La Liga titles and a single Champions League trophy in 2015 but resentment against him had grown in the past year.
He had been criticised due to worsening finances and the team’s decline on the pitch, which saw them lift no major silverware last season.
Following his failed summer move, Messi said he felt deceived by Bartomeu and hit out at his presidency, saying “there has been no project or anything for a long time“.
Bartomeu had been due to step down in March, having served the maximum two terms as club president.
Barcelona are owned by their supporters who vote to elect a president to run the club.
