ZANU-PF musician Chief Hwenje, born Admire Sanyanga Sibanda, is confronting the toughest challenge of his life after being diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that affects the immune system.

The 37-year-old artist, known for his vibrant stage presence and signature dreadlocks, has retreated to his rural home in Shanyura village to focus on healing away from the public eye.

Health Struggles and Treatment

The diagnosis has taken a significant toll on Chief Hwenje’s health, forcing him to undergo critical surgery and treatment while also cutting off his iconic locks.

In an interview with Sunday Mail, he shared the severity of his condition:

“The lymphomas have spread throughout my body, and doctors recommended surgery to remove some of them before they develop further. I am in pain, and sometimes the attacks are so severe that I cannot move or talk.”

Once a symbol of vitality and energy, Chief Hwenje now finds himself struggling with weight loss and the debilitating effects of his illness.

His deteriorating health has led him to cancel several performances, and during the few shows he managed to complete, he relied heavily on pain medication.

“It hurts to see fans calling for more when my body cannot deliver. Some promoters and fans think I’m big-headed, but they don’t understand what I’m going through. Sometimes, I have to take extra medication just to stay on stage,” he lamented.

Finding Solace in Music

Despite these challenges, Chief Hwenje continues to find comfort in music.

He is currently converting his great-grandfather’s house into a studio, a project that holds deep personal significance for him.

However, his health issues have delayed the release of his upcoming album, Chiedza chaSamere, which was initially set for December.

The musician’s plight has also led to misunderstandings regarding his weight loss and decision to shave his dreadlocks.

He expressed frustration over public misconceptions:

“People don’t understand that I am ill, and my medication is costly.”

Focused on Recovery

For now, Chief Hwenje remains dedicated to his recovery, drawing strength from his spiritual beliefs and passion for music.

His story serves as a reminder of the resilience required in the face of adversity and the importance of understanding and compassion from those around us.
