Mia le Roux Withdraws from Miss Universe 2024 Due to Health Concerns

Mia le Roux, who was set to represent South Africa at the Miss Universe finals in Mexico, has officially withdrawn from the competition due to health issues.

The 28-year-old made history in August as the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa, but her journey to the prestigious pageant has taken an unexpected turn.

A Difficult Decision

The Miss South Africa organization announced her withdrawal, emphasizing that le Roux’s health and well-being are their top priority.

In a heartfelt statement, she expressed gratitude for the support she has received from South Africans and described the decision as “incredibly challenging.”

She stated:

“Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me.
However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength.”

Her withdrawal means that South Africa will not be represented at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, where le Roux was among 120 contestants vying for the coveted title.

Background and Preparation

Le Roux had spent several weeks in Mexico preparing for the competition and was excited about the opportunity to showcase her country on a global stage.

She previously described participating in Miss Universe as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to amplify her voice and highlight South Africa’s “beautiful diversity.”

Despite her enthusiasm, le Roux has not disclosed the specific nature of her health concerns that led to her withdrawal.

Overcoming Challenges

Diagnosed with profound hearing loss at just one year old, le Roux relies on a cochlear implant to help her perceive sound.

In earlier interviews, she shared the challenges of her journey, revealing that it took two years of speech therapy before she could say her first words.

Her resilience and determination have inspired many.

The Miss South Africa organization praised le Roux for her “incredible courage and grace” during this difficult time and pledged their support as she focuses on her recovery.

A Loss for Representation

Le Roux’s withdrawal is a significant loss for South Africa at this year’s Miss Universe pageant.

However, her story continues to resonate as a testament to strength and perseverance in the face of adversity.

As she prioritizes her health, supporters rally around her, hoping for a swift recovery so she can continue to inspire others in the future.
