Mukuru, a South Africa based money transfer system has come to rescue Gokwe Chitekete residents by launching their outlet in one of the Shops, Unique Supermarket at Chitekete Business Centre.
The development has served parents from incurring exorbitant costs during this lockdown to travel to Gokwe Centre so that they can access foreign funds from their relatives in different parts of the world.
Of let, Mukuru seemed to be overwhelmed by the demand to the extent that it was no longer able to serve all clients in a day and this caused many people to sleep on verandas for days in Gokwe Centre.
A lady identified as Mai Peshi told My Gokwe that the move was “excellent”. “Vatibatsira kwazvo, rwendo rwapera ndakanorara kuGokwe uku mazuva 4 nekuti kwaiwanda vanhu asi pano chero vakazara unongoenda kumba wodzoka Magwana,” Praised Mai Peshi. She meant Mukuru had served them from sleeping for nights in Gokwe centre, as she referred to her last experience.
Some parents were even happy saying it is now story of the past to give an excise of sending money. One parent identified as Mr Phiri said who accepted to be recorded expressed happiness with the move.
Some parents indicated that the move had brought convenience but were worried by the servicing of the outlet.
“Though this Mukuru is a good move, I am worried with its servicing. Here at Chitekete we are the last recognized in many scenarios. I am afraid this will be the case again with this initiative as we will always be told that there is no cash,” lamented Mr Tirivavi.
Another parent who spoke on account of anonymity said “Farai has done an plausible thing by striking such an agreement with Mukuru. Chitekete is a huge community with a lot of money but we don’t have any financial system around. We only have this KCI Microfinance but they could not help us with such an idea.”
The shop owner also hailed the move as he said it will also help him push sales volumes since those who come to collect their foreign currency will just buy some few commodities they may require in the same roof.
Accessing foreign cash especially this error of lockdown was very difficult for residents as transport operators were charging unrealistic fares for a one way to Gokwe Centre.
People of Gokwe Chitekete are happy because at least one of their problems have been solved though they still have a lot of problems which are not yet solved.
