In a heartbreaking incident on Wednesday afternoon, two students tragically lost their lives in a kombi accident while en route to collect their O-Level results from Mt St Mary’s High School in Hwedza.

Among the victims was Denzel, who had achieved an impressive academic record with six A’s, three B’s, and a C.

The Fatal Journey

The victims, identified as Denzel and Wayne, were part of a group traveling from Harare to the school when their kombi overturned.

Denzel’s funeral wake is being held in Mabvuku, while Wayne’s is in Southlea Park. The news of their untimely deaths has left the community in shock, as both students were seen as bright young minds with promising futures.

Witnesses reported that the kombi overturned near Chizema Shops, approximately 15 kilometers from their destination.

The injured passengers were quickly transported to Mt St Mary’s Hospital for treatment, as school authorities confirmed the devastating event.

Community Grief and Concerns

A parent who spoke to H-Metro expressed deep concern over the safety of students during such significant moments.

“The announcement of children’s academic results has become a daunting task,” they said, reflecting on the growing fears surrounding student safety.

Mr. A. Nyasha, chairman of the school’s development committee, extended condolences to the families of the deceased students.

“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of our boys who couldn’t make it. This is a very difficult time for everyone in our school community,” he stated.

He also praised the hospital staff for their efforts in treating the injured and thanked local authorities and teachers for their prompt response when news of the accident reached them.

A Call for Road Safety Awareness

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in Mozambique.

Authorities are calling for stricter regulations regarding vehicle maintenance and driver education to prevent similar accidents in the future.

As the community mourns the loss of these talented young individuals, there is a collective hope that steps will be taken to ensure safer transport for students during critical times like result collection.

The loss of Denzel and Wayne serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of prioritizing safety on our roads.
