The University of South Africa (UNISA) has taken a firm stance against Walter Magaya, the controversial figure who has falsely claimed to hold a marketing diploma and an honorary doctorate from the institution.

The university announced its intention to pursue legal action against Magaya after he submitted a photocopied diploma to the High Court in an attempt to overturn his disqualification from the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) presidential race.

Background of the Controversy

Magaya, who left Zimbabwe in October following a disputed election, was disqualified by ZIFA for failing to meet the requirement of five ordinary-level passes.

In his defence, he argued that his UNISA diploma should suffice as a higher qualification. However, his claims have now been thoroughly debunked.

In a widely circulated interview with Zimbabwean sports journalist Yvonne Tendai Mangunda, Magaya asserted that he had received an honorary doctorate from UNISA.

This statement has drawn significant attention and scrutiny, prompting UNISA to clarify its position.

UNISA’s Official Statement

On January 29, 2025, UNISA released a statement confirming that they have no record of Magaya as either a student or a graduate. The university condemned his fraudulent claims, stating:

“The University of South Africa (UNISA) notes with serious concern information circulating in the public domain regarding Walter Magaya’s alleged academic qualifications. Based on our records, we can confirm that Mr. Magaya has never been registered or graduated from UNISA.”

The statement further emphasized that any certificates he presents claiming to be from UNISA are fraudulent and that the university reserves the right to take legal action to protect its reputation.

Implications of the Fraud

The fallout from this situation is significant, not only for Magaya but also for the integrity of academic qualifications in Zimbabwe.

With over 100 lives lost during protests following the disputed elections, this incident adds another layer of complexity to an already turbulent political landscape.

Magaya’s actions could expose him to serious legal repercussions, including charges of perjury and contempt of court, as he submitted the alleged diploma as evidence in legal proceedings.

The implications extend beyond his political ambitions; they raise questions about accountability and transparency in Zimbabwe’s leadership.

Public Reaction and Future Consequences

Social media has erupted with reactions to Magaya’s claims and UNISA’s subsequent denial. Many users have expressed disbelief at how someone could attempt such blatant fraud.

Tech and education analysts have pointed out discrepancies in the formatting of the diploma he presented, further questioning its legitimacy.

As authorities consider launching a criminal investigation into Magaya’s actions, this situation serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of verifying academic credentials.

It also highlights the need for stricter regulations surrounding educational qualifications in Zimbabwe.

A Call for Integrity

Walter Magaya’s case underscores the critical importance of integrity in both politics and education.

As UNISA takes steps to address this fraudulent behaviour, it is essential for all stakeholders—educational institutions, political bodies, and citizens—to advocate for transparency and accountability.

This developing story serves as a reminder that actions have consequences, and those who seek to manipulate systems for personal gain will ultimately face scrutiny and repercussions.

As we await further developments, it is crucial for society to remain vigilant against fraud and uphold the values of honesty and integrity in all spheres of life.
