Sengwa clinic under Chief Sai, Gokwe South District, which was destroyed by fire (whose cause has not yet established) on Wednesday has left families with long distance travels to endure in search of medication, My Gokwe can report.
According to close sources, there are indications to a gas leak from a refrigerator at the clinic as the trigger for the inferno which consumed drugs, medical equipment and property worth thousands of dollars.
The villagers are travelling under the scorching sun to the neighbouring clinics: Ndoza clinic nearly 15km or Sai clinic. Some can prefer to Travel to Manoti clinic which according to the reports is nearly 35km or more.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.
“Police are investigating a fire incident which occurred at Sai Clinic on 28 October“, he said.
It is said the fire broke out in the dispensary and spread to other rooms, destroying various properties including drugs.
No one was injured and the cause of the fire is yet to be established.
Likewise, the Gokwe Civil Protection Unit head Netsai Mushauri said they have dispatched a team to ascertain what really happened and how they can assist.
However, the eyewitnesses who saw the fire described it as bizarre.
“I saw the fire it was very tragic what I saw there. I’m not an authority not authorised to speak on behalf of the authorities there. But what I can confirm is that it was unstoppable,” said one eyewitness.
Efforts by My Gokwe Media to contact the authorities at the clinic were fruitless.
We call upon the well-wishers, churches, donor community and the business community to join hands with the local council and help in the rebuilding of the new clinic.
