The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has issued an ultimatum to Registrar General Henry Machiri, demanding the replacement of human rights defender Namatai Kwekweza’s defaced national identity card.

This demand comes after officials at the Civil Registration of Zimbabwe arbitrarily refused to replace her ID, citing that she was on a so-called “Stop List.”

Legal Action Looms

ZLHR lawyers Chinopfukutwa and Kabaya have warned Machiri that failure to comply with their demand will result in legal proceedings against him to secure appropriate relief for Kwekweza.

They emphasized that there is no legal basis for the refusal to replace the pro-democracy campaigner’s national identity card.

The lawyers stated:

“The costs of such unnecessary litigation will be borne by the Registrar General personally, as there is no justification for his refusal.”

Context of the Case

Kwekweza has been a prominent figure in advocating for human rights in Zimbabwe, and her defaced ID has hindered her ability to perform her duties effectively.

The ZLHR argues that the arbitrary decision to place her on a stop list is not only unjust but also undermines her rights as a citizen.

This situation highlights broader issues regarding the treatment of human rights defenders in Zimbabwe and raises concerns about the arbitrary use of power by state officials.

The ZLHR’s commitment to pursuing legal action underscores the importance of accountability and the protection of civil liberties in the country.

As this case unfolds, it will be crucial to monitor how authorities respond to the ultimatum and whether they will uphold Kwekweza’s rights as a citizen.

The outcome could have significant implications for human rights advocacy in Zimbabwe and the treatment of activists by government institutions.
