Sundowns Still On the Hunt for a League Victory

Since the ABSA Premier Soccer League resumed on the 11th of August, the Brazilians have found it difficult to be on the top of the game in the Premier League.

Today, a courageous Maritzburg United extended Mamelodi Sundowns’ wining drought in the league to four matches after they saw a four goal draw match at Lucas Moripe Stadium today on a match ended 2-2 draw.

The Brazilians were tipped to bounce back to their einning ways on their clash with Erik Tinkler’s side today. Their former player Feutmba also told Goal, “Yeah, I want to believe that Sundowns will come with a positive result against Maritzburg United, I think they know they have to do well”.

Sundowns are still on the sixth position in the league, 5 points behind leaders, Amakhosi with 5 games left to play and also Maritzburg remaining on their sixth position.

The dual pair of Jali and Kekana (Bra Hlopho) seemd to pay off in the early stages of the match as the pair pulled strings in the midfield for visitors.

Four minutes into the play, Kekana had already tested the strength of the Ghanaian Ofori who responded with a decent serve to the effort.

21 minutes later, Kekana returned in a decisive long range which was deflected to beat Ofori from a brilliant set up by the amazing Uruguayan Gaston Sirino to make home team down by a goal.

The led did not last long as the home team gave a quick response through Onyango’s blander to save Keagan Buchanan’s ball resulting in Reuck’s first Maritzburg goal, bringing the match to a draw by half time.

Masandawana returned from the break with the same momentum forcing the resisting Maritzburg United to commit a punishable offence in the box in the 50th minute. The spot kick was converted by Nascimento, his fifth league goal in this season.

Sundowns could not manage to contain the pressure of the home team and in 8 minutes the match was back to a draw after a hard work from Thabiso Kutumela. Kutrumela’s strike was too good such that the Ugandan, Onyango was not able to serve their lead.

To rub salt on Mamelodi Sundowns’ woumd, the referee showed Nascimento a second yellow card in the 71st minute, taking Sundowns to 10 man.

It was fortunate for the visitors that they managed to defend very well and the match ended in a 2-2 draw, though this was a huge disadvantage for them as championship contenders.
