Frank Lampard has confirmed that, the club’s goalkeeper target Edouard Mendy, who is being hoped to create competition against Kepa is undergoing a medical as he prepares to join the club, My Gokwe can report.

The Senegalese is expected contend for the position between sticks, dislodging the £71m club record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga whose fault for Sadio Mane’s second goal in their premier league defeat was described as “a clear mistake” by Lampard.

Lampard was quoted saying, “We have brought Mendy in for that competition.

I don’t know what benefits in the long run, football is in your hands. Competition is a regular thing. It’s in everyone’s hands to get into the squad,” he added.

Last season, the Blues head coach had to resort to the 38 year old second choice. Willy Caballero after a series of mistakes by Kepa including the FA Cup final.

Kepa is expected to be warming the substitute’s bench on Wednesday when Chelsea will host Barnsley at Stamford Bridge in Carabao Cup, a decision which Lampard argued he made it way before the Liverpool game.

Mendy who joined Rennes in 2019 from French Ligue 2’s Reims made 9 clean sheets in his 25 league appearances for Rennes, compared to Kepa’s eight clean sheets in 33 Premier League appearances.

Kepa, whose save percentage was 22.8% less than Mendy’s 76.3% has a better passing accuracy 8.1% superior than Mendy’s 70.1%.

It is understood Mendy will not replace Kepa but with Caballero turning 39 later this month, the club wants a younger challenger to their current number one.
